Biographical Sketch
Dr. Coryn is the Director of the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Evaluation (IDPE) program at The Evaluation Center (EC) and an Assistant Professor in the Evaluation, Measurement, and Research (EMR) program in the College of Education’s Department of Educational Learning, Research, and Technology (ELRT) at Western Michigan University (WMU). He received a B.S. in Psychology from Indiana University in 2002 and a M.A. in Applied Social Psychology in 2004 from Indiana University. He earned his Ph.D. in Evaluation under Dr. Michael Scriven in 2007 at Western Michigan University. He has published numerous scholarly, peer reviewed papers in journals such as the American Journal of Evaluation, Canadian Journal of Program Evaluation, Journal of MultiDisciplinary Evaluation, Evaluation Journal of Australasia, New Directions for Evaluation, The Qualitative Report, Research Evaluation, Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, and Current Research in Social Psychology, and has also authored several books and book chapters. He, along with Drs. Michael Scriven, E. Jane Davidson, and Daniela C. Schröter, led the development of the Journal of MultiDisciplinary Evaluation, for which he serves as Co-Editor. Dr. Coryn has been involved in and led numerous research studies and evaluations across several substantive domains, including research and evaluation in education, health, community and international development, and social and human services. He has acquired nearly $1 million in grants and contracts since obtaining his first graduate degree in 2004. His writing and research have focused primarily on evaluation theory, logic, and methodology, including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods; metaevaluation; personnel evaluation; peer review; and advanced statistical modeling techniques with an emphasis on structural equation modeling.

He has given lectures and workshops both nationally and internationally, including a two-day workshop on metaevaluation for students and faculty from Bangkok, Thailand, in 2008; a skill-building workshop at the 2008 American Evaluation Association (AEA) conference; an introductory evaluation workshop at the 2008 Michigan Association for Evaluation (MAE) conference; a workshop on goal-free evaluation and Scriven’s Key Evaluation Checklist (KEC) in Berne, Switzerland, in 2007; and a workshop at the 2006 MAE conference with Drs. Michael Scriven and Daniela C. Schröter. Dr. Coryn has taught numerous evaluation and research methods courses including personnel evaluation, foundations of evaluation, advanced topics in evaluation, and research methods in health and human services, as well supervising students’ independent research, doctoral readings, professional field experiences, and dissertations.

Among Dr. Coryn’s awards are MAE’s John A. Seeley Friend of Evaluation Award, the Indiana University (IU) Award for Graduate Research Excellence, and the IU SMART Merit Award for Outstanding Research.
